Kabir ke Dohe in Hindi with English & Hindi Explanation

In this blog we are presenting to you Kabir’s famous dohe ( Couplets) with Hindi and English Explanation. But before that you must read a bit about his life in English.

Kabir’s brief Biography –

Kabir ji was a great poet and saint of Bhaktikal of Hindi Sahitya. He was a great devotee and social-reformer. He was born in 1398 ( not confirmed) in Kashi. Kabir passed away in 1518 in the same city.

A childless weaver-couple Neeru and Neema brought him up. Kabir’s wife’s name was Loi. Kabir had himself indicated that he had a son named Kamaal and a daughter named Kamaali.

Though Kabir was illiterate, he was not less than a scholar. He was bold, carefree, self-contented and revolutionary social-reformer. His work बीजक has three parts namely साखी, सबद और रमैनी .

Kabir Ji Ke Dohe with Meaning and Explanation – कबीर के दोहे हिंदी व अंग्रेजी में

1. जाति न पूछो साध की , पूछ लीजिये ग्यान।
मोल करो तरवार का , पड़ा रहन दो म्यान।

हिंदी व्याख्या – यहाँ कबीर जी कहते हैं कि हमें साधु की जाति नहीं पूछनी चाहिए।  अगर पूछना ही है तो उसका ज्ञान पूछना चाहिए।  उसी प्रकार हमें तलवार का ही मोल-भाव करना चाहिए अथार्थ हमें तलवार को ही मुख्य मानना चाहिए न कि म्यान को।  कहने का भाव है व्यक्ति के असली गुण को ही पूछना चाहिए।

English Explanation and Meaning – Kabir says that we must not ask a saint his caste. If we have to know anything about him that must be his knowledge. In the same way, we must bargain for the sword without giving importance to sheath. In other words,  we must give importance to internal quality.

2. आवत गारी एक है , उलटत होइ अनेक।
कह कबीर नहिं उलटिए, वही एक की एक।

व्याख्या – कबीरदास जी कहते हैं कि जब किसी के द्वारा दी गई कोई गाली आती है तो वह अपने आप में एक होती है।  लेकिन जब इसी गाली को प्रतिक्रिया स्वरुप लौटाया जाता है तो यह अनेक गालियों का रूप ले लेती है।  इसलिए हमें किसी के अभद्र वचनों पर भी बुरी प्रतिक्रिया नहीं देनी चाहिए। कहने का भाव  है कि प्रतिक्रिया में एक  गाली भी नहीं देनी चाहिए।  अथार्थ बुराई को बुराई से नष्ट नहीं करना चाहिए।

English Explanation of Doha – Kabir ji says when somebody abuses others, he receives in myriad. So we should try to keep from using abusing language to anybody. Even we must not reciprocate a single abuse. The poet means to say that evil can’t kill evil.

3. माला तो कर मैं फिरै, जीभि फिरै मुख माहिं।
मनुवाँ तो दहुँदिसि फिरै , यह तौ सुमिरन नाहिं।

व्याख्या in Hindi – कबीर जी कहते हैं कि माला तो हाथ में घूमती है।  साथ ही साथ जीभ मुख के अंदर प्रभु का नाम लेते हुए घूमती है।  परंतु मनुष्य का मन चारों दिशाओं में भटकता रहता है।  यह सच्ची भक्ति नहीं है।  कहने का भाव है कि मानव मन चंचल है व् बिना इस पर नियंत्रण के सच्ची भक्ति नहीं हो सकती।

English Explanation – A person tells rosary in his hands. In the meantime, his tongue moves in the mouth remembering God. But human mind is capricious. Until it is constant, a person can’t pray to Almighty.

4. कबीर घास न नींदिए , जो पाऊँ तलि होइ।
उड़ि पड़ै जब आँखि मैं , खरी दुहेली होई।

व्याख्या – यहाँ कबीर जी कहते हैं कि कभी उस घास की निंदा नहीं करनी चाहिए जो हमारे पैरों के तले हो।  जब यही घास का तिनका उड़कर जब आँख में पड़ जाता है तो बहुत कष्ट पहुंचाता है।  अथार्थ हमें कभी भी अपने नीचे काम करने वाले मजबूर व्यक्ति की निंदा नहीं करनी चाहिए क्या पता कल जब वही व्यक्ति जागृत होगा आपको कितना कष्ट पहुचाये।

English Explanation – Kabir ji says that when the grass is under out feet, we must not say anything wrong about it. When the blade of the same grass falls into the eye, it can cause much pain. Here, the poet means to say that when a person is working under you, you must not suppress him. When he gets power, he may pay you back in the same coin.

5. माला फेरत जुग भया , फिरा न मन का फेर।
कर का मनका डार दे , मन का मनका फेर।

Hindi व्याख्या – कबीर जी कहते हैं कि बेशक व्यक्ति को माला फेरते अथार्थ पूजा पाठ करते युगों बीत जाएँ , उसका स्वाभाव नहीं बदलता।  अथार्थ यह व्यर्थ है।  इसलिए व्यक्ति को हाथ से  माला छोड़ कर , मन के मनके फेरने चाहिए अथार्थ मन को बदलने की कोशिश करनी चाहिए।  यहाँ कवि ने पाखंड पर प्रहार किया है।

कबीर के दोहे

English Explanation – A person may worship for ages, it doesn’t guarantee the change in his nature. It is merely hypocrisy. So instead of resorting to hypocritical practice such as telling the beads of rosary, the person must try to change his nature.v

6. पोथी पढ़ी पढ़ी जग मुआ, पंडित भया ना कोय।
ढाई आखर प्रेम का , पढ़े तो पंडित होए।

व्याख्या – ज्ञान की किताबें पढ़ कर भी लोग मृत्य के आगोश में चले गए व् उनमें से कोई पंडित ( विद्वान ) नहीं बना ।  अगर इंसान प्यार के ढाई अक्षर पढ़ ले अथार्थ अगर वह दूसरों से प्यार करना सीख ले तो वह अपने आप पंडित बन जाता है।

Explanation – Reading so many books doesn’t make us scholar. If a person learns to love the humanity, he deserves to be called a scholar.

7. रात गवाई सोए के, दिवस गवाया खाए।
हीरा जन्म अमोल सा , कोड़ी बदले जाए।

व्याख्या – इंसान अपनी जिंदगी को रात में सोने में व् दिन में खाने में गुजार देता है।  इस तरह वह इस हीरे जैसे जन्म को कोड़ी में बदल देता है।  कहने का भाव है कि जिंदगी को बेकार में व्यर्थ नहीं करना चाहिए।

English Explanation – A man spends his life in sleeping and eating. He doesn’t do anything worth-doing. In this way he whiled away this gem-like-life and converted it into a cowery ( a worthless thing).

8. सब धरती काजग ( Paper ) करूँ ,लेखनी ( Pen ) सब वनराज ( Trees )।
सात समुद्र की मसि (Ink ) करूँ, गुरु गुण लिखा न जाये।
